PM Surya Ghar Yojana sees rapid expansion with 26 lakh rooftop solar installations

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on Monday said that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has recorded significant progress since its launch in February 2024, with over 26.19 lakh rooftop solar (RTS) systems installed across the country as of March 19, 2026. The scheme aims to achieve installations in one crore residential households by the end of FY 2026-27, as part of India’s push towards clean energy adoption.

The demand-driven scheme is open to all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity and allows them to apply through a national online portal for installing rooftop solar systems. Since inception, the government has disbursed ₹17,967.53 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to beneficiaries. The entire process—from application to subsidy transfer—is handled digitally, with the subsidy typically credited within 15 days of the consumer’s request, provided all details are correctly submitted.

To speed up implementation, the government has introduced several measures, including a fully online approval and subsidy disbursal system, simplification of regulatory procedures, and automatic load enhancement up to 10 kW. The net metering agreement has also been integrated into the application process. MNRE, along with REC Limited, which serves as the National Programme Implementing Agency, is working closely with DISCOMs to ensure smooth execution of the scheme.

State-wise data shows that states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala have emerged as key contributors in rooftop solar adoption, reflecting strong participation under the scheme. The government reiterated that continued coordination with states and power distribution companies remains central to achieving the ambitious target of one crore installations.

The details were shared in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik.
