National DMF Summit concludes; govt reaffirms focus on mining

The two-day National District Mineral Foundation (DMF) Summit 2026 concluded in New Delhi on Tuesday, with the government reiterating its commitment to the welfare and inclusive development of mining-affected communities.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy, who presided over the valedictory session, said the DMF initiative reflects the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and stressed that officials must work with dedication to improve the lives of people living in mining regions.

The summit focused on enhancing transparency, accountability, and data-driven planning in the implementation of DMF projects. A key highlight was the demonstration of the upgraded DMF Portal 2.0, aimed at enabling real-time monitoring and improving governance.

Deliberations during the summit emphasised the need for baseline surveys, impact assessments, and targeted interventions under the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKKY). Discussions also centred on ensuring timely fund release, strengthening audit mechanisms, and promoting community participation to improve outcomes.

The concept of developing “model districts” and introducing performance-based rankings was also discussed, with the aim of fostering accountability and encouraging better implementation across states.

Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Piyush Goyal highlighted that DMF projects should be aligned with the needs of local communities and integrated with NITI Aayog’s model district approach to ensure measurable and structured development.

He stressed the importance of coordination between the Centre, states, and district administrations for effective utilisation of funds, adding that priority must be given to schemes that bring tangible improvements in people’s lives.

In his closing remarks, the Minister called for the development of at least one “modern village” in each district as a model for progress in mining-affected areas. He said such initiatives should demonstrate visible improvements in quality of life and ensure that the benefits of mining activities reach local communities.
