Devotees brave cold to ring in New Year at Golden Temple, shrines across Punjab and Haryana

Braving the biting cold, hundreds of devotees visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar and other shrines across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh early Thursday to usher in the New Year.

Devotees began queuing up at the Golden Temple from midnight, with long lines continuing through the morning for darshan at the Harmandir Sahib. Many also took a holy dip in the sarovar.

“Offering prayers at the Golden Temple on the first day of the year feels truly special. We hope 2026 brings fulfilled prayers and new beginnings,” said Kavita Gupta, a devotee from Delhi.

Similar scenes were witnessed at the Mata Mansa Devi shrine in Panchkula near Chandigarh, while people across the region visited temples and gurdwaras to mark the start of the New Year.

Extending New Year greetings, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann prayed that the Almighty fill people’s lives with happiness and success.
