BSNL rolls out Voice over WiFi services nationwide

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling, across all telecom circles in the country.

With the rollout, BSNL customers can make and receive voice calls and send messages over a Wi-Fi network using their existing mobile numbers, even in areas with weak or no mobile signal. The service is expected to improve connectivity in locations such as homes, offices, basements and remote areas where cellular coverage is limited.

VoWiFi is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based service that allows seamless handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks without interrupting calls. Users do not need to download any third-party applications, as calls can be made through the phone’s default dialer.

The service is particularly useful in rural and remote regions, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection is available, including through BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband networks. BSNL said VoWiFi will also help reduce congestion on mobile networks. The service is being offered free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls.

According to BSNL, the nationwide launch of VoWiFi is part of its broader network modernisation programme and reflects its focus on improving service quality and extending reliable connectivity, especially in underserved areas.

VoWiFi is supported on most modern smartphones. Customers can activate the service by enabling the Wi-Fi Calling option in their handset settings. For information on device compatibility, users can visit BSNL customer service centres or contact the BSNL helpline at 1800-1503.
