Vice President Radhakrishnan addresses convocation ceremony of Mahatma Gandhi Central University in Bihar’s Motihari

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Saturday called upon students to adopt “Nation First” as their guiding principle while addressing the third convocation ceremony of Mahatma Gandhi Central University in Motihari, East Champaran.

Addressing graduating students, the Vice-President said that a convocation marks not the end of education but the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning. He urged the youth to use emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and data science responsibly for nation-building.

Tribute to Champaran’s Legacy

Highlighting the historical significance of the region, V-P Radhakrishnan said Champaran occupies a special place in India’s freedom movement, where Mahatma Gandhi emerged as a mass leader during the Champaran Satyagraha.

He also underscored Bihar’s rich intellectual and spiritual heritage, noting that Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment in the region, while ancient institutions like Nalanda University symbolised global centres of learning. He further recalled the contributions of thinkers such as Chanakya.

Focus on Education and Women Empowerment

The Vice-President praised the university for implementing the National Education Policy 2020 and introducing integrated courses, along with initiatives such as the Indian Knowledge Systems Centre and promotion of sports under the Fit India Movement.

He expressed satisfaction that women students topped both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, calling it a reflection of the country’s progress towards women-led development.

Message to Youth

Calling on students to contribute to society, V-P Radhakrishnan urged them to take a firm stand against substance abuse and work towards building a healthy and strong nation. He also emphasised the continued relevance of Gandhian principles, particularly non-violence, in both real and digital spaces.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Syed Ata Hasnain, Harivansh, Samrat Choudhary, and other senior leaders and officials.

During his visit, the Vice-President also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the Charkha Park and the Mahatma Gandhi Satyagraha Memorial, recalling his enduring message of truth, non-violence and service to the nation.
