Vice President invokes Ramnath Goenka’s legacy at journalism awards, calls for debate without disruption

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday invoked the legacy of Ramnath Goenka to underline the importance of fearless and principled journalism, saying his ideals remain relevant in an era where the media faces both influence and scrutiny.

Addressing the 20th edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards organised by The Indian Express Group in New Delhi, the Vice President said the awards honour not just professional excellence but also the enduring spirit of courage and independence associated with Goenka. He described Goenka’s commitment to truth—particularly during challenging periods—as a guiding force for journalists today.

Recalling his role during the Quit India Movement, V-P Radhakrishnan said Goenka chose to shut down his newspaper in protest against British censorship. He also referred to his contribution in the Constituent Assembly, especially on issues concerning press freedom and taxation.

Highlighting Goenka’s resistance during the The Emergency in India, the Vice President noted that publishing a blank editorial became a powerful symbol of defiance and the right to free expression. Despite imprisonment of editors, financial losses, and harassment, Goenka remained steadfast in defending democratic values, he said.

The V-P said Goenka’s journey—from Darbhanga to Chennai and later as a Member of Parliament from Vidisha—reflected India’s unity in diversity. He added that his decision to publish newspapers in multiple regional languages alongside English helped expand access and inclusivity in journalism.

Stressing the role of media in a democracy, the Vice President said discussion, debate, and dissent must ultimately lead to decision-making in the national interest rather than disruption. He also echoed the Prime Minister’s call to shed colonial mindsets, urging media institutions to present issues from an Indian perspective rooted in the country’s civilisational ethos.

He further emphasised the need for balanced storytelling, calling on the media to highlight stories of innovation, progress, and grassroots transformation alongside challenges.

Additionally, the Vice President congratulated the award winners and commended the organisers for sustaining a tradition that recognises excellence and integrity in journalism.
