UDF Sweeps Kerala with 102 Seats, Ends LDF’s Decade

The Kerala Assembly election results have delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the United Democratic Front (UDF), marking a shift in the state’s political landscape after a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule.

In the 140-member Assembly, the UDF secured 102 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark. The Indian National Congress won 63 seats, while its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), secured 22 seats.

The LDF was reduced to 35 seats, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) winning 26 seats and the Communist Party of India securing 8. Other allies registered marginal gains.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won three seats, improving its presence in the Assembly compared to previous elections.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan retained his Dharmadam constituency, securing 85,614 votes. However, several ministers in his cabinet faced defeats in their respective constituencies.

Among notable results, Congress candidates secured victories in key seats, while independent and rebel candidates also registered wins in select constituencies, reflecting localised electoral dynamics.

In Thiruvananthapuram region, the BJP registered gains, including a victory in Nemom. The party also secured wins in Chathannoor and Kazhakoottam, marking an expansion of its footprint in the state.

The results indicate a return to the pattern of alternating governments in Kerala, with the UDF set to form the next government.

Polling for the Assembly elections was held on April 9, recording a voter turnout of 78.27 per cent.

The outcome marks a significant change from the 2021 elections, when the LDF had secured 99 seats and returned to power, breaking the state’s long-standing trend of alternating regimes.

Following the results, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tendered his resignation to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who asked him to continue in office until alternative arrangements are made. (ANI)
