Six Indian Ships Cross Strait of Hormuz Safely, Says MEA

Six Indian-flagged ships carrying LPG, LNG and other cargo have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.
Addressing a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remains in touch with Iran and other countries in the region to ensure safe and unimpeded transit of Indian vessels.
He noted that discussions held over the past several days have helped facilitate the safe passage of six ships, while efforts continue to secure movement for other vessels operating in the region.
The MEA also confirmed India’s participation in a meeting on the Strait of Hormuz being hosted by the United Kingdom later in the day. The Foreign Secretary is representing India at the talks.
The development comes amid concerns over the safety of around 18 Indian-flagged vessels reportedly operating in or near the Persian Gulf as regional tensions persist.
Clarifying reports about India paying transit tolls, Jaiswal said there has been no such discussion with Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy corridor, and the ongoing conflict in West Asia has raised concerns about supply disruptions and maritime security.
Last month, Iran had indicated that vessels from certain “friendly” countries, including India, would be allowed passage through the strait even as restrictions apply to others.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also discussed the evolving security situation in West Asia with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, reiterating the need to ensure freedom of navigation and maintain secure shipping lanes.
