Sarthal winter festival boosts tourism in Kathua district

In a major push to promote tourism and showcase the natural and cultural heritage of the region, the Tourism Department, in collaboration with the District Administration Kathua and the Bani-Basohli Development Authority, organised the second edition of the Sarthal Winter Festival in the scenic Sarthal Valley of Bani subdivision.

Sarthal, regarded as one of the most picturesque destinations in the Bani area of Kathua district, is known for its snow-covered meadows, dense forests and pristine natural beauty. The festival drew thousands of tourists and local residents, transforming the valley into a vibrant winter celebration.

The event was inaugurated by Bani MLA Rameshwar Singh, who said that the festival reflects the long-standing aspiration of the people of the region to bring Sarthal onto the tourism map. He noted that the area has vast untapped potential and could develop into a major winter destination comparable to Gulmarg. The MLA also appreciated the efforts of the district administration and organisers for ensuring smooth arrangements.

The festival featured performances by noted singer Sonali Dogra and folk artist Bishan Dass, who captivated the audience with a blend of Dogri, Hindi and Punjabi folk music. Local artists and youth groups also presented cultural programmes, adding colour and diversity to the celebrations.

Deputy Commissioner Kathua Rajesh Sharma described Sarthal as a unique destination that combines natural beauty with the charm of snowfall. He said the Winter Festival aims to promote sustainable tourism, reconnect people with cultural traditions rooted in nature, and generate livelihood opportunities for the local population. He added that the administration is committed to organising more such events to firmly establish Sarthal Valley as a winter tourism hub in Jammu and Kashmir.

The festival also showcased traditional Pahadi cuisine through local food stalls, offering visitors an authentic taste of the region’s culinary heritage. Recreational activities set against the snow-clad mountains further enhanced the festive atmosphere.

Several senior officers and officials from the district administration, tourism department and local bodies were present on the occasion.
