SAIL supplies indigenous steel for INS Taragiri, boosting defence self
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has played a key role in strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities by supplying specialised steel for the newly inducted warship INS Taragiri.
The stealth frigate, the fourth vessel under the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A), was commissioned into the Indian Navy on April 3. The warship has been constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited using approximately 4,000 tonnes of special grade steel plates supplied entirely by SAIL.
The steel was manufactured at SAIL’s integrated plants in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela, showcasing the company’s advanced metallurgical capabilities and adherence to stringent quality standards required for defence applications.
SAIL has been a consistent contributor to India’s defence indigenisation efforts, supporting flagship initiatives such as ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’. The company has previously supplied specialised steel for major naval platforms, including the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, as well as earlier Project 17A frigates—INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, and INS Udaygiri.
The induction of INS Taragiri marks another milestone in India’s push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing, underlining the growing role of domestic industries in enhancing the country’s maritime and strategic capabilities.
