Rajnath Singh pays tribute to 1999 Kargil War hero Col Sonam Wangchuk, MVC

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday paid heartfelt tribute to Sonam Wangchuk, a decorated hero of the Kargil War, following his passing.
In a post on X, Singh said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Colonel Sonam Wangchuk. He was a highly decorated officer of the Indian Army, renowned for his gallantry, resolute leadership and unwavering commitment to duty.”
“A proud son of Ladakh, he exemplified the spirit of the region- resilient, steadfast and deeply rooted in service to the Nation, while standing as a symbol of India’s unity in diversity,” the Defence Minister further said.
“His courageous actions of leading by personal example during Operation Vijay inspired his men under the most demanding conditions in high-altitude. His life remains a testament to courage, sacrifice and national integration and his legacy will continue to inspire coming generations,” Singh concluded.
Col Wangchuk played a pivotal role during Operation Vijay, where his leadership under extreme high-altitude conditions inspired troops and contributed significantly to India’s military success. His bravery earned him the Maha Vir Chakra, one of India’s highest wartime gallantry awards.
The Indian Army also paid homage to the late officer. Chief of Army Staff Upendra Dwivedi, along with all ranks, remembered him as a brave soldier and committed leader whose life exemplified service and national unity.
In a post on X, the Army expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and affirmed solidarity during this time of grief.
