Railways cracks down on crime with over 52,000 arrests in five years, steps up security measures

The Indian Railways has reported over 52,000 arrests between 2021 and 2025 under the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1966, as part of its efforts to curb crimes affecting railway property and passenger safety.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said complaints were filed against more than 50,000 offenders in courts during this period.
The data shows that 12,157 cases of stone pelting were recorded across the network, with 8,441 arrests made by the Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police. The Railways also reported only three derailments linked to miscreant activities in the past five years.
Officials said measures such as intensified patrolling in vulnerable sections, closer coordination with state police and intelligence units, deployment of drones and CCTV cameras, and public awareness drives near railway tracks are being undertaken to prevent sabotage and ensure safe train operations.
