Railways achieves highest | DD News

Indian Railways has recorded its highest-ever freight loading in 2025–26, transporting 1670 million tonnes (MT) of cargo, marking a growth of 3.25 per cent over the previous year.

The Ministry of Railways said the achievement reflects improved operational efficiency, enhanced capacity, and growing reliance on rail transport for bulk commodities across sectors.

The total number of wagons handled also increased by 4.56 per cent, rising from 2,79,12,271 in 2024–25 to 2,91,86,475 in 2025–26, indicating a steady rise in logistics demand.

The growth in freight loading was primarily driven by fertilisers and pig iron and finished steel, which recorded increases of 13.49 per cent and 13.11 per cent respectively. The rise points to higher demand for agricultural inputs as well as continued expansion in industrial activity, particularly in the steel sector.

Among core infrastructure commodities, iron ore transportation grew by 6.74 per cent to reach 190.12 MT, while cement loading rose by 4.74 per cent to 157.17 MT. These trends suggest sustained momentum in infrastructure and construction activities across the country.

Zone-wise, South Western Railway recorded the highest growth of 14.89 per cent in freight loading during the year. Other zones that registered double-digit growth include North Central Railway at 12.62 per cent, East Coast Railway at 10.42 per cent, and West Central Railway at 10.06 per cent.

Several other railway zones also reported positive growth, reflecting balanced regional performance and improved freight handling capacity across the network.

The Ministry said the consistent rise in freight loading underscores Indian Railways’ role as a key driver of economic activity. By providing a cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally sustainable mode of transport, Railways continues to reduce logistics costs, ease road congestion, and support a more efficient logistics ecosystem.
