PwDs eligible for railway concessional fare facility: Indian Railway

Indian Railways on Monday announced that Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) holding a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card will be allowed to travel in unreserved coaches earmarked for Divyangjan in Mail and Express trains.

According to an official statement, PwDs with a valid UDID card, as well as those availing concessional fare facilities, will be recognised as bona fide passengers. They will be permitted to travel in designated coaches, including SLRD and LSLRD (luggage-cum-brake van) compartments, provided they possess valid travel authority.

The Railways also said that action will be taken under the provisions of the Railway Act, 1989, against unauthorised passengers found travelling in these reserved compartments, to ensure that the intended beneficiaries can access the facilities without inconvenience.

All Zonal Railways have been directed to issue necessary instructions to concerned officials to ensure proper implementation of the provisions.

The Divyangjan Card, also known as the E-Ticketing Photo Identity Card (EPICS), is issued to Persons with Disabilities to enable them to avail travel concessions. The card is granted on the basis of a valid disability certificate, with the UDID card being accepted for certain categories. Applications for issuance or renewal can be submitted through the Indian Railways Divyangjan portal or the Central Government services portal.

Separately, Indian Railways reported strong performance in scrap disposal during the financial year 2025–26. Against a target of Rs 6,000 crore, the Railways achieved scrap sales worth Rs 6,813.86 crore, surpassing the benchmark.

This follows a similar trend in 2024–25, when the organisation exceeded its target of Rs 5,400 crore by recording scrap sales of Rs 6,641.78 crore.

According to officials, the sustained momentum in scrap monetisation reflects Indian Railways’ focus on efficient asset management and transparent disposal mechanisms. By clearing unserviceable materials, the Railways is unlocking value from idle assets while freeing up space across depots, yards and workshops.
