PMGSY-III extended till 2028 with revised outlay of ₹83,977 crore

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III beyond March 2025, extending its timeline up to March 2028. The scheme focuses on consolidating key rural road networks, including through routes and major rural links, to improve connectivity between habitations and essential facilities such as Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAMs), higher secondary schools, and hospitals.
The Cabinet has also revised the scheme’s outlay to ₹83,977 crore from the earlier ₹80,250 crore.
As part of the decision, the government has extended deadlines for infrastructure completion, with roads and bridges in plain areas and roads in hilly regions to be completed by March 2028, while bridges in hilly areas have been given an extended deadline till March 2029.
Additionally, projects sanctioned before March 31, 2025, but yet to be awarded, will now be eligible for tendering.
The Cabinet also approved the sanctioning and execution of 161 long-span bridges, estimated at ₹961 crore, which are aligned with already sanctioned road projects.
The extension is expected to accelerate rural development by improving connectivity, reducing transportation time and costs, and enhancing access to markets for agricultural and non-farm products. It is also likely to strengthen access to education and healthcare services, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
The government noted that the continued implementation of the scheme would generate employment opportunities through construction activities and boost rural enterprises, contributing to inclusive growth and supporting the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
