PM Modi hails Dr. Ronaldo Laishram, says astrophysicist’s achievement has brought global recognition to Manipur’s Loktak Lake

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised Manipur-born astrophysicist Dr. Ronaldo Laishram for his contribution to astronomy, saying his decision to name a newly discovered cluster of young galaxies after Loktak Lake reflected his deep connection with his roots despite achieving global recognition.

Addressing the nation during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said Dr. Laishram’s achievement was a matter of pride for the entire country and an inspiration for India’s youth.

PM Modi said that Dr. Ronaldo Laishram from Manipur works in Japan and has been part of the team that discovered a massive cluster of young galaxies. He is actively working in the fields of science and innovation and gaining global recognition, yet he remains deeply connected to his roots and never forgets to honour his homeland whenever the opportunity arises.

The Prime Minister noted that the scientist had named the newly discovered galaxy cluster the ‘Loktak Proto-cluster’, drawing inspiration from Manipur’s iconic freshwater lake.

“You might be wondering what exactly he has done. Well, he named this entire cluster the ‘Loktak Proto-cluster,’ linking it to a beautiful lake in Manipur. Loktak is a vast freshwater lake. ‘Phumdis’, the floating islands of vegetation in Loktak Lake create a unique landscape; it appears as if small islands are floating in a vast ocean. Similarly, these young galaxies in the universe form a massive structure. Today, Manipur’s Loktak is shining not only on the country’s map but also across the vast cosmos. This achievement is a source of pride for every Indian. It teaches our young friends that they can scale new heights while remaining connected to their traditions. These are roots that can also light up the world of stars,” he said.
