Philippines Braces for Super Typhoon Fung-wong After Deadly Kalmaegi Leaves Over 200 Dead

The Philippines faces another bout of extreme weather as Typhoon Fung-wong moves toward its eastern coast, just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi left at least 204 dead and thousands of people displaced.

The new storm is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon before making landfall on tomorrow or early Monday, bringing storm surges up to five meters high. With winds reaching 140 kilometres per hour and gusts of 170 kilometres per hour, Fung-wong has already unleashed heavy rain on eastern provinces and could impact capital Manila. Residents in coastal and low-lying areas have been ordered to evacuate, while rescue efforts continue in central regions devastated by Kalmaegi.
