Nepal EC allocates PR seats to six parties, RSP emerges largest in House

The Election Commission of Nepal has allocated seats to political parties in the House of Representatives under the proportional representation (PR) system. The seats have been distributed among six political parties that crossed the PR threshold in accordance with the provisions of Clause 60(2) of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2074 BS, based on the total number of valid votes secured by each party.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party received 57 seats under the PR system, followed by the Nepali Congress with 20 seats. The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) secured 16 seats, while the Nepal Communist Party obtained nine seats. The Shram Sanskriti Party and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party received four seats each.
Under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, the Rastriya Swatantra Party won 125 constituencies. Nepali Congress secured 18 seats, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) won 10 seats, and the Nepal Communist Party won eight seats. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party won one seat, the Shram Sanskriti Party secured three seats, and one seat went to an independent candidate.
Following the allocation of PR seats, the total strength in the House of Representatives now stands at 182 seats for the Rastriya Swatantra Party, 38 for Nepali Congress, 26 for the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), 17 for the Nepal Communist Party, five for the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and seven for the Shram Sanskriti Party.
In terms of voter participation in the House of Representatives elections 2026, out of 18,903,689 registered voters, 11,168,032 cast their votes under the FPTP system. Of these, 10,559,017 votes, or 94.55 per cent, were valid. Under the PR system, 11,280,617 votes were cast, of which 10,835,025 votes, or 96.05 per cent, were valid.
The Election Commission has also issued a circular directing the concerned political parties to select their PR candidates and submit the names to the commission by Sunday.
