LS Speaker Om Birla urges lawmakers to rise above politics, focus on public welfare

Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on Thursday called on lawmakers to rise above personal and political considerations and serve people with integrity, stressing that public representatives must work diligently to fulfil the aspirations of citizens.
Inaugurating the first CPA India Region Zone VII Conference in Goa, Birla underscored that elected representatives carry the responsibility of translating public expectations into concrete actions while strengthening democratic institutions through transparent, inclusive, and responsive governance.
Highlighting the role of young legislators, Birla said they have a crucial responsibility in achieving the vision of a developed India, or “Viksit Bharat,” by 2047. He noted that their energy and innovative approach can drive inclusive growth and help build a self-reliant and equitable nation.
Emphasising the importance of legislative effectiveness, the Speaker urged members to deepen their understanding of parliamentary procedures and actively participate in debates. “The more legislators familiarize themselves with legislative processes, the more effective their contribution in the House will be,” he said.
Birla also called for healthy competition among state legislatures to promote public welfare and good governance, noting that India’s parliamentary democracy continues to strengthen, reflected in rising voter participation since Independence.
Addressing the role of technology in governance, he said that while tools like artificial intelligence are transforming policymaking, human sensitivity remains equally vital. He urged lawmakers to stay connected with citizens and address their concerns with empathy.
Speaking on the occasion, Birla praised Goa’s cultural vibrancy and tourism potential, and highlighted the role of the newly formed CPA Zone VII -comprising Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa – in promoting democratic excellence and collaborative governance.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Harivansh Narayan Singh, Pramod Sawant, Ram Shinde, and Rahul Narwekar, who also addressed the gathering.
The conference brought together legislators from the region to exchange best practices and strengthen cooperation in advancing governance and development initiatives.
