J&K announces summer vacation for Jammu schools from June 1 amid intense heatwave

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday announced summer vacation for schools in the Jammu division in view of the prevailing heatwave conditions in the region.
Jammu and Kashmir education minister Sakina Itoo said on X that summer vacations for schools falling under the Summer Zone of Jammu Division will begin from June 1 for primary classes and from June 8 for students of Classes 6 to 12.
“Keeping in view the prevailing weather conditions, summer vacations for schools falling under Summer Zone of Jammu Division shall commence with effect from June 1 for Primary Classes and with effect from June 8 for students of Classes 6 to 12. Wishing all students a safe and enjoyable vacation,” she posted.
Meanwhile, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) issued a heatwave advisory after temperatures in the city were forecast to touch 45 degrees Celsius. Authorities urged people, especially children and elderly citizens, to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary movement during peak afternoon hours.
The civic body said prolonged exposure to heat could lead to dehydration, exhaustion and heat-related illnesses. Water sprinkling vehicles have been deployed in several parts of the city to reduce surface temperatures and provide temporary relief to commuters and pedestrians.
The JMC advised residents to stay hydrated, wear light cotton clothes, use umbrellas or head coverings while stepping outdoors and avoid direct exposure to sunlight. People were also asked to keep homes properly ventilated and consume adequate fluids during the extreme weather conditions.
Special caution has been advised for children, elderly citizens and those suffering from health complications. Authorities also warned residents against leaving children or elderly persons inside parked vehicles, saying enclosed vehicles can become dangerously hot within minutes.
Officials said field workers and sanitation staff working outdoors have been instructed to take regular hydration breaks and follow precautionary measures.
According to data released by the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 23.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 1.5 degrees below normal for this time of the year, while Jammu recorded 39.9 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees above normal.
