Indus Water Treaty in Abeyance Due to Pakistan’s Support for Cross

India on Thursday said the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) will remain in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and permanently ends its support for cross-border terrorism, reiterating New Delhi’s long-standing position on the issue.
Addressing the weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Pakistan must “credibly and irrevocably” end its backing of terrorism operating across borders.
“Our position on the Indus Waters Treaty has been consistent. IWT stands in abeyance in response to Pakistan’s sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan must credibly and irrevocably abjure its support for cross-border terrorism,” he said.
The remarks came as India marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, launched after the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also marked the anniversary, saying Operation Sindoor demonstrated India’s determination to hold perpetrators of terrorism accountable.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said the operation sent a strong message that threats to peace and security would be effectively countered. He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India remains committed to a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.
