Indian Navy to commission indigenous stealth frigate Taragiri on April 3

The Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth frigate, Taragiri (F41), on April 3, marking a step forward in India’s efforts to strengthen its maritime capabilities and indigenous defence production.

According to an official statement, the commissioning ceremony will be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Taragiri is the fourth ship under the Project 17A class of stealth frigates and has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. With a displacement of around 6,670 tonnes, the vessel represents an advanced iteration of earlier designs, featuring improved stealth characteristics and a reduced radar cross-section.

The warship has been developed with over 75 per cent indigenous content, involving a network of more than 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The project is part of the government’s broader push to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing.

Equipped with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, Taragiri is designed for high-speed operations and extended endurance, enabling it to undertake a wide range of missions.

The ship’s armament includes supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and anti-submarine warfare systems. These are integrated through an advanced combat management system aimed at enabling quick response during operations.

Apart from combat roles, the frigate is also capable of supporting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions, reflecting its multi-role operational capability.

The induction of Taragiri is expected to further enhance the Indian Navy’s operational readiness as it continues to expand its fleet with a focus on indigenous platforms.
