India outlines roadmap for resilient, innovative pharma sector at PharmaMed 2026

The ninth edition of PharmaMed 2026 concluded in the national capital on Friday, with policymakers, industry leaders and regulators laying out a comprehensive roadmap to shape the future of India’s pharmaceutical sector.

Organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry in collaboration with the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, the conference focused on building a resilient, innovation-driven and globally competitive pharma ecosystem.

Discussions across four thematic sessions highlighted India’s transition from a volume-driven model to a value-driven approach, with emphasis on quality, innovation, and last-mile access to medicines.

Experts stressed the need to boost research in high-value pharmaceuticals, biologics and advanced therapies, while strengthening capabilities in biosimilars and biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Sessions also underlined the importance of regulatory harmonisation, improved compliance standards, and the adoption of global benchmarks to ensure quality across the supply chain.

Participants called for reduced dependence on imports of APIs, enhanced domestic manufacturing, and the use of digital tools such as AI to tackle supply chain challenges and counterfeit drugs.

The conference further highlighted the growing role of e-pharmacies and efficient distribution systems in improving affordability and access, reinforcing India’s commitment to achieving healthcare equity while maintaining its global leadership in the pharmaceutical sector.
