Greater use of Hindi in governance and science strengthens public connect: Jitendra Singh

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh on Monday emphasised that expanding the use of Hindi in official and scientific communication strengthens engagement with citizens and makes administrative processes more accessible.

Addressing the Hindi Salahkar Meeting of the Department of Space and the Department of Atomic Energy, the minister said greater use of Hindi in governance helps bridge the communication gap between institutions and the public.

Singh noted that the use of Hindi in official work has increased significantly over the past decade. However, he pointed out that a few years ago only around 14 per cent of official work was conducted in Hindi, highlighting the need for sustained efforts to promote its wider use in government functioning.

He also appreciated the initiatives taken by the leadership of Indian Space Research Organisation and the Department of Atomic Energy to encourage learning and use of Hindi in official and technical communication within their organisations.

During the meeting, members of the Hindi Salahkar Samiti shared suggestions to further strengthen the use of Hindi across scientific institutions. They recommended closer coordination between departments and advisory members and proposed periodic meetings to review progress and identify new measures to expand the language’s use in administrative and scientific work.

The committee also suggested that translation-related work should be handled by trained Hindi translators and that mandatory training programmes be organised to improve the quality and efficiency of translations.

Highlighting the role of technology in promoting Indian languages, Singh said emerging tools such as Bharat AI can translate content into 22 Indian languages, which could help disseminate scientific knowledge and official communication to a broader audience.

The minister further said the Centre, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is not only promoting Hindi but also encouraging the development and use of regional languages across government departments.

Singh stressed the importance of regular engagement between the departments and members of the Hindi advisory committee, suggesting that virtual meetings could also be organised to ensure continuous dialogue and follow-up on the recommendations.

Prior to the meeting, the minister visited exhibitions organised by both departments and reviewed technologies and initiatives showcased by them. He also noted that the departments have begun making their reports and official communications available in Hindi.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue efforts to promote the use of Hindi in official work while strengthening coordination between government departments and advisory members.
