Gandhinagar Building Site Accident: Iron Slab Collapse Leaves 5 Workers Injured, Several Feared Trapped

GANDHINAGAR: Five workers were rescued and several others were feared trapped after a massive iron structure collapsed at an under-construction building in the Kudasan area of Gandhinagar on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred at around 9 pm, when an iron slab being installed between two buildings suddenly gave way, trapping workers beneath the heavy metal debris.

Following the collapse, teams from the fire brigade, police and local administration rushed to the construction site and began rescue operations. Labourers at the site told officials that several workers had been present on the metal structure when it collapsed, raising concerns that more people could still be trapped.

More than four fire brigade vehicles were deployed for the rescue operation. Ambulances were also sent to the location to provide immediate medical assistance to injured workers.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi reached the site and monitored the ongoing rescue efforts.

Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said that five injured workers had been pulled out from the debris and taken to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital for treatment.

“Five persons have been shifted to the hospital for treatment so far. A team of doctors is taking care of them. Some of them suffered fractures on their backs and legs. Doctors will take a call on the need to operate on them,” Pansheriya told reporters at the hospital.

Rescue teams were using a large crane and electric cutters to clear the collapsed metal structure and determine whether additional workers remained trapped underneath.

Officials said the exact number of people who may still be trapped was not immediately known, and rescue operations were continuing at the site.
