Four Bangladeshi Migrants Die as Two Boats Capsize Off Libyan Coast, Red Crescent Confirms
Four Bangladeshi nationals have died after two boats carrying nearly 95 irregular migrants capsized off the Libyan coast. The Libyan Red Crescent confirmed the incident, which happened Thursday night near the coastal city of Al-Khums, about 118 kilometres east of Tripoli.
According to the organisation, the first boat was carrying 26 Bangladeshi migrants. Four of them lost their lives when the vessel went down. The Red Crescent did not give details about what happened to the passengers on the second boat, which had 69 people on board, including two Egyptians and dozens of Sudanese nationals.
The latest tragedy adds to the growing death toll along the Central Mediterranean route-one of the world’s most dangerous migration corridors. Just a day earlier, the International Organization for Migration reported that at least 42 migrants were missing and presumed dead after a rubber boat sank near the Al Buri oilfield, north-northwest of Libya’s coast.
