“Energy and ambition across India is incredible”: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on country’s role in AI

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Thursday said India will play a central role in shaping both the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence, as global technology leaders gathered in the national capital for the AI-India Impact Summit attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing the summit, Amodei praised the “energy and ambition” of India’s technology ecosystem and announced the company’s expansion plans in the country, including the opening of a Bengaluru office and the appointment of Irina Ghose as managing director for Anthropic India.
He said the company has also entered partnerships with major Indian enterprises, including Infosys, adding that innovations emerging from India are setting standards for the Global South.
Calling recent advances in AI “staggering”, Amodei said the technology has the potential to significantly improve healthcare outcomes and reduce poverty, but warned of risks such as autonomous behaviour of models, misuse by individuals and governments, and economic disruption.
“India has an absolutely central role to play — both in harnessing the opportunities and addressing the risks,” he said.
The AI-India Impact Summit has brought together policymakers, industry experts, academics, technology innovators and civil society representatives from across the world to discuss governance, safety and societal impact of artificial intelligence.
The event aligns with the vision of “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” (welfare for all, happiness for all) and forms part of ongoing international efforts to strengthen global cooperation on AI.
