BJP Sweeps Assam, NDA Secures Third Straight Term with Massive Mandate

The Assam Assembly election results have delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has secured a three-fourths majority in the 126-member House.
According to final results, the BJP won 82 seats on its own, comfortably crossing the majority mark. Its allies, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), secured 10 seats each, further strengthening the NDA’s position in the state.
The Indian National Congress (INC) won 19 seats, while other parties registered a limited presence. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal (RJRD) won two seats each, and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) secured one seat.
This marks the third consecutive victory for the BJP-led NDA in Assam and the party’s highest-ever tally in the state. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP had won 60 seats, while the Congress had secured 26.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the party’s performance, thanking the people of Assam for their support and attributing the victory to the NDA’s development-focused governance.
“Assam blesses BJP-NDA once again. The victory reflects unwavering support for our emphasis on development and improving people’s lives. We will continue working for the state’s transformation,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
He also commended party workers for their sustained efforts, noting that their outreach and organisational work had helped strengthen the party’s presence in the state over the years.
The election also saw a setback for the Congress, with senior leader Gaurav Gogoi losing the Jorhat seat to BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes.
This was the first Assembly election in Assam under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with the BJP improving its performance compared to previous polls.
Polling for the Assembly elections was held on April 9, with a voter turnout of 85.96 per cent from an electorate of over 2.5 crore. A total of 722 candidates, including 59 women, contested the elections.
The results reaffirm the NDA’s strong position in Assam and reflect continued support for its governance agenda in the state.
