Akshaya Tritiya: Odisha Begins Farming Season, Disburses Rs 838 Crore to Farmers

On the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday marked the ceremonial beginning of agricultural activities and the construction of the sacred chariots of Lord Jagannath.

Describing the day as highly auspicious, the Chief Minister highlighted its cultural and agricultural significance, as it traditionally marks the start of the farming season in the state.

As part of the celebrations, the ritual of ‘Akhi Muthi Anukula’ was formally initiated, symbolising the commencement of agricultural activities. On the occasion, the state government also released financial assistance under the CM Kisan Yojana to support farmers ahead of the Kharif season.

A total of Rs 838.48 crore was disbursed to around 41.68 lakh farmers across Odisha to help them prepare for the 2026 Kharif crop season.

The Chief Minister said that the timely financial support would enable farmers to begin agricultural operations without delay. Under the scheme, farmers receive Rs 4,000 annually in two instalments. Combined with Rs 6,000 provided under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi in three instalments, the total annual assistance amounts to Rs 10,000 per farmer.

He added that consistent financial support has contributed to a rise in crop production in the state in recent years.

The Odisha Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), in a post on X, stated: “Farmers are the true drivers of a prosperous Odisha. The state government remains committed to empowering them through financial assistance. In this regard, Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi has provided financial aid of Rs 838.48 crore to 41,68,582 farmers under the CM-Kisan scheme on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya and the state-level Farmers’ Day.”

“Agriculture is the foundation of Odisha’s economy, culture, and prosperity. Special emphasis is being placed on improving seed quality, irrigation, and market linkages to enhance farmers’ income. The government is also promoting organic farming through the ‘Balabhadra Organic Farming Mission.’ Additionally, the ‘Shri Anna’ campaign is being intensified to take Odisha’s traditional Mandia to the global stage,” the CMO added.
